A tale of a tiny bag of silver
On Monday September 1, 2025 silver was $40.68 USD/oz.
On Tuesday December 30, 2025 it closed at $77.91 USD/oz.
That is 4 months.
This brings me to the tale of a tiny bag of silver bits.
On Aug 30 2025 I purchased a tiny bag of little silver findings for a project. As a business I do purchase from a reputable Canadian wholesale company and I do purchase sterling silver. This little bag of silver was $37. On October 15 the same bag was $56. On December 20 it was $68. On January 2, 2026 the exact same bag of silver findings was $82.
Well.
Damn.
There might have been some other words said, I’ll leave those to your imagination.
As you can imagine this is making running a small jewelry business challenging. Thank goodness I’m not a goldsmith, I have no idea how they will survive. I have spent a lot of time in the fall of 2025 scavenging through bins and drawers finding old stock and seeing what I can come up with rather than buying anything new.
Here’s what I am doing as of January 9, 2026.
Changes to pendants.
Pendants no longer come on chains. If prices are going to increase every couple of weeks I can’t keep increasing all prices on every single item. It’s not the cost of the glass that is going up, I’m making less on each piece trying to keep things reasonable. From now on when you purchase a pendant it comes as just that, if you need a chain I sell those separately. I will recommend the chain that will work best for the pendant. I think this is a win/win as most of you have a number of chains already. It also means that I only have to increase a few items rather than hundreds.
I have been experimenting with using materials other than silver such as Japanese seed beads, silicone tubing and leather. Some of the experiments have been more successful than others. I will continue to experiment.
I will not move to plated silver. Other metals such as copper or stainless steel don’t have the selection of findings that I need and are also experiencing huge price jumps.
Will prices decrease? Not until the world stabilizes and that isn’t happening in the foreseeable future.
For now, this is our reality.
